March With Me – The annual walk
BALLARAT LOCALS TO WALK 116KMS FOR YOUTH MENTAL ILLNESS
You may have seen her walking around town – averaging over 100 kilometres each week – but Michelle Smith is walking for other reasons than exercise and fresh air, she’s walking each day to raise awareness for youth mental health.
On the weekend of March 4 and 5, Ballarat local Michelle will join over 300 other participants for March With Me – an annual walk that sees participants walk 116kms from Portsea to Port Melbourne to raise awareness and funds for youth mental health foundation, Love Me Love You.
“The most important thing is letting them know that we’re here if they need us,” said Michelle. In 2016 March With Me raised over $200,000, which helped to deliver nearly 11,000 educational experiences to young Australians.
Michelle’s training schedule for March With Me currently sees her averaging between 20-30kms each day around Ballarat.
Michelle said she’s most looking forward to the challenge of walking 116kms. “I’m also looking forward to the friendships and comradery that will grow along the way, as we all walk together.”
Joining forces with three other Ballarat locals Rachel, Paul and Andrea, the group had hoped to raid $2,000 for Love Me Love You but is currently nearing $5,000.
Love Me Love You hopes to raise $300,000 for March With Me 2017, which will help the foundation to facilitate mental health education presentations and wellbeing workshops to schools and sporting clubs around Australia
