Former AFL player Lance Picioane helps kids with mental illness

Local lowdown: I love Essendon

Lance Picioane \ 36

Former AFL player Lance Picioane knows what it’s like to be down. He had it all; a first round draft pick at the age of 17 and a budding career with Adelaide, Hawthorn and North Melbourne, but off the field Lance faced a battle with depression.

He quit the AFL in 2005 but it wasn’t until 2012 that he sought treatment. Two years later he established Love Me Love You. It helps young people overcome mental illness and other problems and gets kids back to school, sport and life.

Where do you go for a great cup of coffee?

I do a lot of work at Creme in Keilor Road. I take my laptop, order a latte and it’s head down organising talks at schools, sporting and community clubs. For a catch-up with friends, we go to The Reverend Cafe.

For a serious workout?

I’m at Snap Fitness every day. Being fit is part of my personal well-being program, it builds a positive relationship between the physical and mental states.

For a sneaky takeaway?

The fish and chips shop in Hoffmans Road know my order – a hamburger, two dim sims, a potato cake and chips.

For the perfect gift?

Every day is a perfect gift just being with my wife Emma and son Alexander [nine months].

For a big night out?

A date night with my wife. We explore great restaurants but Chiba is on trend for us.

For some serious pampering?

Our family pamper ourselves at the Ascot Food Store. Great food and atmosphere.

For some me-time?

Spending time with Alexander outside is part of my overall well-being plan.

For a pick-me-up when you’re feeling blue?

I founded Love Me Love You so no one has to feel blue. I go there for the support network that allows me to face any challenges.
